When exercising or doing intense physical activity, many people are confused between choosing isotonic drinks or water to maintain body hydration. Both have the same main function, which is to replace lost fluids, but with different compositions and varying benefits depending on individual needs.
Water remains the best choice for daily hydration. Without added sugar or electrolytes, water helps maintain body fluid balance without adding calories. For people who are active or do light exercise, water is enough to replace lost fluids.
On the other hand, isotonic drinks contain electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, and magnesium which can help restore salt balance in the body. This is very beneficial for athletes or those who do heavy exercise for more than an hour, because it can prevent dehydration and maintain physical performance. However, many isotonic drinks contain added sugar, so their consumption needs to be limited so as not to contribute to increased blood sugar levels.
The best choice depends on individual needs. If it is only for daily hydration, water remains the healthiest solution. However, for heavy and prolonged physical activity, isotonic drinks can be an alternative that helps maintain electrolyte balance.
