Using Aromatherapy to Fight Seasonal Depression

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a mood disorder that often occurs during certain seasons, usually during the winter or rainy season. Reduced sunlight and cold temperatures can trigger feelings of sadness, fatigue, and loss of energy. One natural way to combat these symptoms is with aromatherapy.

Aromatherapy uses essential oils to stimulate the sense of smell and influence the limbic system of the brain, the part that regulates emotions. Essential oils such as orange, lavender, and rosemary have particular benefits for fighting SAD symptoms.

Orange oil is known for its refreshing scent and ability to boost mood. In one study, the scent of orange was shown to reduce symptoms of anxiety and provide an energizing effect. Lavender, on the other hand, helped with the insomnia that often accompanies seasonal depression, thanks to its calming properties. Meanwhile, rosemary improves concentration and energy, helping to fight fatigue.

How to use it varies, from diffusers, aromatherapy candles, to massage with essential oil blends. With regular use, aromatherapy can provide a relaxing effect and help balance mood, making it an effective addition to a mental health care routine to fight seasonal depression.
